A huge ancient reservoir attracting large numbers of waterbirds, especially in the migrant season.

Mannar is a long, flat island linked to the north-west mainland by a causeway, reaching out towards India along the chain of sandbanks known as Adam's Bridge (Rama's Bridge). It feels wild and remote, with salt marshes, lagoons and wandering donkeys.
From November to March, thousands of migratory birds, including flamingos, gather at the Vankalai Sanctuary. History is everywhere too: a Portuguese-Dutch fort, ancient baobab trees planted by Arab traders, and the much-loved Madhu Church on the mainland.
Bring binoculars and visit the bird sanctuary early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
